One Connecticut | Event: A Forum on Modernizing the Personal Income and Sales Tax

December 10, 2004

The second in our series of forums on important issues facing our state: Modernizing the Personal Income and Sales Tax was held Friday, December 10, 2004 at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. Questions about income and sales taxes in Connecticut and in other states were addressed. Has our state tax structure kept up with the changes in federal law and Connecticut’s economy? Does our tax structure unfairly burden middle class residents? Can we preserve Connecticut’s estate tax in light of changes in federal law? Can we make the sales tax fair in the changing economy?

Our speakers included:

  • Jon Shure, President of New Jersey Policy Perspectives, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts research on state issues and was instrumental in the push to modernize New Jersey’s tax code. [1] www.njpp.org

  • Chuck Collins, co-founder with Bill Gates, Sr., of Responsible Wealth and Associate Director of United for a Fair Economy, a national non-partisan organization that draws attention to the consequences of growing income and wealth inequality in the U.S. [2] www.faireconomy.org

  • Ellen Scalettar, Senior Policy Fellow, Connecticut Voices for Children, statewide expert on Connecticut’s tax structure. [3] www.ctkidslink.org
