Considering Corporate Taxation

September 17, 2004

One Connecticut held our first Tax Forum: Considering Corporate Taxation on Friday, September 17 at the Legislative Office Building. Forty three legislators and many advocates attended.

Considering Corporate Taxation raised questions about the structure and history of corporate and business taxes in Connecticut and in other states. Questions considered included: Are our corporate tax laws fair? Are we asking small business to pay too much, and larger ones too little? Which if any of the millions of dollars in tax credits permitted for corporations really help our state economy? Are there too many loopholes in Connecticut’s corporate tax laws?

Our speakers included:
Richard D. Pomp, PhD, Alva P. Loiselle Professor of Law at UCONN, a nationally recognized expert on the topic of corporate taxation.
Greg LeRoy, Director of Good Jobs First, a national watchdog group on the topic of corporate tax subsidies.
Ellen Scalettar, Connecticut Voices for Children, statewide expert on Connecticut’s corporate tax structure.

It is our hope that this forum will provide a good framework for discussion of strategies in the coming year to consider for reforming Connecticut’s corporate tax structure.
